Military Students

VCU recognizes and values the experience of our students who have served — and are serving now — in the U.S. military.

VCU formally evaluates military training and experience listed on the Joint Services Transcript (JST) and/or Air University/Community College of the Air Force transcript when an admitted or enrolled student submits the official document. Once evaluated, the transferable training and experiences are listed in the Course Equivalency Table under Alabama (AL) for the U.S. Air Force and under District of Columbia (DC) for the U.S. Army, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Navy. Training and experience that are typically considered transferable to VCU include Physical Conditioning or Fitness, Leadership, Communication, Military Science, Intelligence Analysis, Supervision, and electrical engineering-related work, as well as other experiences that can be attributed to one of VCU’s subject areas

VCU will also provide students who are former or current military with credit based on their years of military service, in addition to the formal training provided by the branches of the military. Service members are awarded one to six credits of Military Science (MILS) elective courses. The amount of credit awarded to each student is directly tied to the number of years of service at the time the student enrolls in VCU.

Prospective students with military credit

Prospective VCU students with military credits can contact the VCU Transfer Center and request an unofficial evaluation of how those credits will transfer to VCU and apply to their prospective major.  If you are a prospective or incoming transfer student who would like to work with a transfer advisor, please fill out our online request form.

Admitted students with military credit

Admitted undergraduate VCU students with military credits who accept an offer of admission to VCU will receive an email from the VCU Transfer Center after their credits have been evaluated.  This email will inform students how they can review their official credit evaluation by visiting Degree Works, our online degree audit tool. Degree Works provides students with an individualized audit of how their transfer credits, including their military credits, apply to the degree requirements at VCU and tracks students’ progress in completing those requirements. Here are instructions on how to access Degree Works.
